Neil McSweeney
If one was to write folk based music, with a tinge of blues and country, incorporating elements of 'Heroin' era Velvets and the Bad Seeds' menace, then one might arrive somewhere near Neil McSweeney & The Gents. But one would have to be very talented indeed to write songs as simplistically magnificent as those that make up 'Remember to Smile'.
Hailing from Sheffield, songwriter Neil McSweeney writes, sings and performs all his own material, the very same that makes up the above album, which was recorded with 'the Gents'; an amorphous group of local musicians who dropped in on the sessions for the album. Live, the Gents include members of Sheffield bands Rumpus and Baby Long Legs, Leeds stalwarts Scaramanga Six and ihop, the remix duo responsible for re-working the Long Blondes' single 'Separated by Motorways'.
His album "Remember to Smile" was released 15th May to great acclaim.
